Treating inflammation may help patients suffering from epilepsy

IN THE NEWS: A New York Times article examining the role anti-inflammatory drugs may play in treating epilepsy in patients who don’t respond to anti-seizure medications quoted UC Irvine epilepsy expert Dr. Tallie Z. Baram:

[…it] remains unclear whether inflammation might be implicated in all forms of epilepsy or which patients might benefit from anti-inflammatory treatment.

“Like any new field, there’s a lot of enthusiasm and almost a bit of religion involved,” said Baram. “The challenge for the next few years is to find out the limitations, the boundaries, the real mechanisms.”
